6. Monochrome Cats
Publication design
Crowdfunding project
Monochrome Cats is a crowdfunded photo publication that documents 139 stray cats over a span of three years, organised by time, location, and color. Shot across seven different neighborhoods between February 3, 2017 and May 1, 2020, the project reflects a quiet attention to place, presence, and the patterns of urban life.
As the debut publication of independent press Kiwing Books—founded by Junhee Kim and Yunseo Song—the book explores how we shape and adapt to the visual language of contemporary social media.
Through a seemingly simple act of photographing cats, it questions how we communicate, construct meaning, and reflect on ourselves within fleeting moments and fragmented platforms.
Beyond the book itself, a series of goods including stickers, postcards, and pencils were designed to accompany the project. Monochrome Cats reached over 300% of its funding goal, supported by a wide community of readers and cat lovers.
